ABSTRACT People spend more time indoors or less sun light exposure due to climate conditions, and nutritional deficiencies have been resulted in more widespread of vitamin D deficiency and related problems. Current scientific data suggested that a possible relationship between lower 25- hydroxylvitamin D (25(OH) D) levels and psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, higher comorbidity levels between psychiatric disorders and somatic diseases caused by vitamin D deficiency seem to support this relationship. It is shown that vitamin D is a biochemical factor that have important role on secretion of neurotrophic factors which is essential for protection of central nervous system, and increases antioxidants. It is supposed that vitamin D has some effects on regulation of mood and cognitive functions because it has a role on synthesis of monoamines. In this review, first mentioned have been psychiatric disorders probable which is associated with Vitamin D deficiency such as autism, schizophrenia, cognitive deficits, mood disorders and possible action mechanisms. Then, psychiatric symptoms are observed in the medical pathologies related with vitamin D deficiency have been mentioned. Finally, information has been given about the prevention and treatment of possible psychiatric statements which are related with vitamin D deficiency.
