OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine and compare the dissociative experiences and childhood traumas and types of patients with different psychiatric disorders who were admitted to the women’s psychiatric service and who stated that they were exposed to childhood trauma.
METHOD: Prospective descriptive type clinical questionnaire survey. This study included 57 patients diagnosed with different psychiatric disorders, who were hospitalized at Bakirköy Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Training and Research Hospital, 15th Women's Psychiatry Clinic, and who were found to have trauma according to Childhood Abuse Question List. These patients, who were found to have trauma according to Childhood Abuse Question List were given Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and Childhood Trauma Scale (CTQ) tests.
RESULTS: Mean age of 57 patients included in the study: 36.1±10.6; average disorder period: 8.7±8.5 years; average DES score: 31.8±21.8; average CTQ score 59.9±22.4. The mean DES score of 16 bipolar patients with a statistically comparable number was 27.5 ± 19.5, while mean CTQ score was 68.4 ± 23. The mean DES score of 26 depressed patients was 35.9 ± 25 and the mean CTQ score was 54.6 ± 21.2; CTQ physical neglect subscale in patients with bipolar diagnosis; 12.6±6.4; patients with depression diagnosis: 8.7±3.3; CTQ physical abuse subscale score for patients with bipolar diagnosis: 13.8±5.4; for depression: 8.6 ±4.7.
DISCUSSION: As two groups of disease that can be compared statistically, childhood physical abuse and physical neglect scores in bipolar disorder patients were statistically significantly higher than depression patients. This finding is a preliminary finding of the study in which it is important to compare and analyze childhood trauma in other psychiatric diagnoses, which are etiologically important in diagnoses such as schizophrenia and dissociative disorder.
