Objective: In this study, we aimed to determine whether there is a difference between levels of interleukin-2 and plasma lipids of suicide attempters and normal controls and if it’s associated with levels of plasma lipids.

Method: 48 suicide cases who were admitted consecutively to emergency department and 41 healthy controls were investigated for plasma lipid and interleukin-2R levels.

Results: No difference was found between suicide attempters and controls for interleukin levels. There was a positive correlation between interleukin-2R and low density lipoproteins, tryglicerides and negative correlation between high density lipoprotein.

Conclusion: Our findings confirm that tryglicerides and low density liporoteins stimulate production of interleukin-2 and increase interleukin-2 which leads to depression and suicide via melatonin supression rather than a direct causal relationship between interleukin-2 and suicide attempt.
