Who is Nazan Aydın?


Nazan Aydin was born in Erzurum. She completed her medical education at the Medical Faculty of Cumhuriyet University and her special medical training in the field of Psychiatry at the Medical Faculty of Atatürk University.

During 1998-2013, she has continued her academic and clinical works at Atatürk University, Medical Faculty, Department of Psychiatry.

Between 2013-2018 years, She has been studied at Bakırköy Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Education and Research Hospital.

Her areas of interest are neuroscience, women’s mental health and interpersonal psychotherapy.

She believes that human beings are consist of systems, in order to understand human beings as a whole, it is necessary to understand biological systems. In this direction, Aydin is conducting experimental researches in the frame of neurosciences. Experimental neuroscience studies are mainly focused on autonomic ganglia, olfactory and taste pathways.

Second interest area for Aydin is women’s mental health and especially perinatal psychiatry. She aims to enhance the awareness, prevention, and treatment of mental health problems related to childbearing. In connection with this interest, Aydin has pioneered the initiation of organizations providing clinical and research services in this area.

She has been launched a section for pregnancy and delivery related mental disorders within the Psychiatric Association of Turkey.

She is also established the Bakırköy Women’s Mental Health Center in Bakırköy Prof. Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Education and Research Hospital in December 2015. That is the first and only center in Turkey that provides state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of psychiatric disorders associated with female reproduction.

Aydin has initiated an official cooperation between International associations which are working on global issues related to perinatal area and women mental health. She is currently Turkish representative of International Marce Society and Postpartum Support International.

By the coordination of Professor Aydin, Turkey Maternal Mental Health Awareness Alliance founded at 2016. This alliance focuses on prevention, screening, improved treatment of pregnancy and postpartum mental disorders which affect approximately 14-36% of moms in Turkey. It is also aimed at the creation of awareness about the increasing quality of mother’s and child’s life, the emphasis of the importance of antenatal and postnatal mental health and the quality and accessibility of the service of Maternal Mental Health. This alliance is a part of Global Maternal Mental Health Day.

Third interest area of Aydin is Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) which is the time-limited, empirically validated treatment. IPT focuses on interpersonal issues, which are understood to be a factor in the genesis and maintenance of psychological distress. Interpersonal problems such as grief and loss, conflict and changes are the primary focus of treatment.

Nazan Aydin is a IPT psychotherapist, trainer and supervisor. She is the president of Interpersonal Psychotherapy Association in Turkey. She has been conducting educational activities to disseminate IPT in Turkey.
